IEC 61508 is the international standard for the functional safety of electrical, electronic, and programmable electronic systems. It specifies requirements for the entire life cycle management of safety-critical systems, from design to decommissioning.

The aim of the standard is to identify, assess and reduce risks associated with the functioning of systems to minimize potential hazards to people, the environment and the system. Under this standard are further standards specified for the areas of industry, medicine, buildings, household, energy and transportation.

Developed specifically for the safety of electrical and electronic systems in motor vehicles, ISO 26262 is commonly used in the automotive industry. It defines guidelines that cover the entire life cycle of a vehicle system, including development, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning.

The aim of ISO 26262 is to identify, assess and manage risks associated with electronic systems in vehicles to increase the safety of vehicles and minimize potential hazards for drivers, passengers, and other road users. Compliance with ISO 26262 is mandatory in the automotive industry and includes different safety integrity levels (SIL), which are applied depending on the risk assessment of the system.

Depending on the product, its intended use, and the place where it is to be marketed, there may be local, national, or international requirements. Even if no legal requirement exists for a component or product to be certified for functional safety, this is usually required by the OEM or their suppliers.

In short – the level that you require. We are comfortable with the highest safety level such as ASIL D or SIL-4. But, if your product only requires to comply with a medium safety level such as ASIL-B / SIL-2, we will respect that and not overengineer our recommendations. The relevant safety level depends on your specific product and the desired operating environment. During the development of the product, the required safety level is determined by analyzing the product in accordance with IEC 61508, ISO 26262 or EN 50126.
  • INVENSITY provides you with a report at the end of an assessment, e.g. in the form of a presentation, in which we outline the results of your assessments. In this report, we summarize the findings of the assessment and provide recommendations on how potential security gaps can be closed.
  • You will receive an official certificate by the auditing authority after completion of an audit.

The basic standard for functional safety is IEC 61508. Specific industry standards have been developed from the standard in order to better derive requirements and specifications.

These sectors include industry, construction, transportation, energy, and medical technology. Just to name a few industry standards, these include IEC 62061 for machinery in industry. In transportation, ISO 26262 for automotive and DIN EN 50126 for railway are also based on the IEC.

In general, it can be said that IEC 61508 considers the appropriate methods for achieving functional safety in the systems it covers. IEC 61508 is relevant for safety-related systems that contain electrical, electronic and/or programmable electronic equipment (E/E/PE).

Practical examples of safety-related E/E/PE systems covered by IEC 61508 are:

  • Gas burner management systems

  • Variable speed motor drives used to limit speed as a protective measure
  • Remote monitoring, operation, or programming of grid-supported process plants
  • Information-based decision support tools where erroneous results may affect safety.
ISO 26262 is an international standard that deals specifically with the functional safety of road vehicles, in particular electrical and electronic systems in motor vehicles. ISO 26262 covers systems such as brakes, steering, powertrain, driver assistance systems, infotainment systems and other electrical and electronic systems in motor vehicles. It applies to all manufacturers, suppliers and developers of components, software and systems in the automotive industry. This includes OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers), suppliers of vehicle components, manufacturers of electronic control units, software developers and other players in the automotive industry.

DIN EN 50126 is a European standard that deals with the safety of railroad systems. It applies to the development, operation, and maintenance of railroad systems, including rolling stock, signaling equipment, interlockings, communication systems and other relevant components in the railroad sector. The standard defines requirements for safety management, risk assessment, specification of safety requirements and other aspects to ensure the safety of railroad systems.

Functional safety is a part of general safety that depends on a system or installation functioning correctly in response to its inputs. Functional safety is achieved when each specified safety function is performed and the performance level required for each safety function is achieved.

Functional safety can be briefly described as the protection of users from technology and at the same time the protection of technology from users. However, from a technical perspective, functional safety is defined as a system designed to prevent unacceptable risks of injury or damage to the health of individuals through the correct execution of one or more automatic protective functions, often referred to as safety functions. A safety system comprises one or more safety functions.

It should be emphasized that a functional safety system actively participates in the operation of the system by responding to predefined triggers and causing the overall system to actively change. Objects such as fire doors or clothing that function passively are not considered functional safety systems.
