In my third year of undergrad at Michigan State University, I was constantly evaluating and contemplating what I wanted out of a future career. As I was pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Biomedical Engineering, I was very drawn to the possibility of working in the automotive and/or med tech industries. Besides the fact that these industries correlated with my field of study, I was also drawn to them as they were both industries with immense focus on innovation and technology. Before engineering consulting was introduced to me as a career path, I was constantly managing an internal conflict deciding which path to follow. Thankfully, I was introduced to an engineering consultancy, INVENSITY, and, unbeknownst to me at the time, my future career with a fantastic company.
I started at INVENSITY in 2018 as a Systems Engineering Consultant. I was promised immense development opportunity, a fast learning curve, and a culture that would allow me to develop the best version of myself alongside my colleagues. I have to admit, these promises seemed a bit grandiose and idyllic when I first joined, but my experience since starting at INVENSITY has proven that I was wrong to doubt the ability of INVENSITY to deliver on each of these promises.
My first big opportunity came quickly at INVENSITY. I was to take over a systems engineering project from a colleague at one of the world’s largest tier 1 automotive suppliers. The project consisted of managing and performing most of the primary systems engineering development responsibilities including: design work products, requirements elicitation, requirements management, test case creation, test management, and more. If it wasn’t for the impressive project support built into the INVENSITY process, that project would have been incredibly challenging and frustrating. Not only was this support necessary to perform the project, it was also what allowed me to learn so quickly, enable my colleagues with the knowledge I was developing, and feel very confident because I knew that I had a team of experienced colleagues supporting me every step.
As this project started to come to a conclusion, the next big opportunity came my way. That being said, it was not exactly the opportunity I anticipated. INVENSITY was offering me a position within the Business Development Department. After much back and forth, I decided to give this path a try. With little business experience, my colleagues in the business department spent immense time and effort enabling me with the skills and information I would require to be successful. It took some time, but after awhile, I was able to open my first project at a new client. That project turned into three more, and soon this client was a big partner for us in Detroit. Business Development has allowed me to grow, learn, and develop in ways I could never have imagined. Especially after just 2 short years with the company.
After reflecting on my time here, it is clear to me that it is the opportunities to grow, the culture this company has built up since its’ creation, and the people that make it such a special place. Like many organizations, INVENSITY has always expressed a sincere focus on the development and satisfaction of their employees. However, unlike many organizations, INVENSITY’s promise for a chance to grow and develop is not just a statement. It is backed up by the companies actions day after day, week after week, year after year. The story of my career path is just one of many that illustrates this point. I will always be proud to be a part of INVENSITY and thankful that I was able to find a place so incredible to begin my professional career.
