The EU AI Act adopted in 2024 is the first worldwide comprehensive, supranational AI regulation. As product security law, it regulates AI according to their risk, aiming to ensure AI systems are trustworthy, safe and designed in accordance with fundamental rights. Systems with unacceptable risk are forbidden, systems with high risk have to fulfill extensive obligations. To make sure that the regulation does not stifle innovation, several measures like regulatory sandboxes are in place to facilitate development of AI in the EU.
The Act requires organizations to assess and classify AI systems by risk level, ensuring due diligence to meet compliance and avoid penalties. Key next steps include employee training, risk assessments, conformity checks, procurement adjustments, and implementing AI governance and strategy. Notably, AI literacy training not only supports compliance but also fosters broader, more innovative and efficient AI adoption within companies.
